The main energy storage project in Belgium is the construction and operation of an offshore “energy atoll” (essentially a manmade offshore pumped-storage facility), for which the Electricity Act has been modified in 2014 (see below), in order to support offshore wind-generated electricity production.

Belgium’s Drogenbos battery park will supply enough power for the average daily electricity consumption of 38,400 households On October 30, 2025, high-voltage grid operator Elia announced that ENGIE’s Drogenbos project has been selected in the fifth CRM auction, securing a 15-year capacity contract starting in November 2027.

Together, these projects will represent a total installed capacity of 380 MW and a total storage capacity of 1.5 GWh. They will deliver an essential contribution to grid stability and maximize renewable energy integration into the Belgian electricity system.

It will be delivered by Italian developer NHOA Energy. French state-backed utility Engie has broken ground on the second of the battery energy storage systems (BESS) awarded it by Belgian grid operator Elia under a national plan to procure more grid electricity.
